The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of primary importanceto hydrogen fuel cells, and catalysts for the ORR are necessary for theefficient operation of the cell.  ReplacingPt as the electrode catalyst with base metals is highly desirable for reasonsof cost and scarcity. The use of iron porphyrins as electrocatalysts for the reductionof oxygen has been previously studied, however investigations of the catalytic efficiencyunder kinetically controlled conditions are rare. This talk will discuss theutility of carboxylate groups as pendant proton relays in the secondarycoordination sphere of iron tetraphenylporphyrins. The use of cyclicvoltammetry to investigate the catalytic turnover under conditions approaching kineticcontrol will be described. Investigation of the products of the reduction byrotating ring disk voltammetry will also be presented.
