Recent mechanistic studies of CdSe nanocrystal synthesis have suggested possible pathways of monomer generation. Herein, we report the identification of tri-alkyl acyloxy phosphonium as a key intermediate in the synthesis of CdSe using cadmium carboxylate as the precursor. Our result suggests that a nucleophilic attack of carboxylate on the phosphine selenide is responsible for the initial formation of the monomer.
