High temperature, thermochemically-based approaches to splitting water and carbon dioxide are attractive options for storing solar energy in the form of chemical fuels and mitigating the growth of greenhouse gas emissions while providing for a more sustainable energy future. Sandia National Laboratories has embarked on an effort to develop an industrial-scale process based on two-step, non-volatile metal oxide cycles entitled �Sunshine to Petrol�. High solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency and material viability are critical for any such process to be successful. Advances in synthesizing, characterizing, and understanding the remarkably dynamic behavior of these active materials and reactive structures will be discussed.
