Polyalthenol, a naturally occurring indole sesquiterpene alkaloid from the fruits of Greenwayodendron suaveolens was first identified in the literature in 1976.  Polyalthenol shows activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), demonstrating a MIC90 of 4�g/mL.  The synthesis of complex natural products with medicinally significant biological activity continues to challenge the community of organic chemists.  This presentation will highlight the efforts toward the synthesis of polyalthenol, a potentially new class of antibacterials, specifically, the utilization of an asymmetric conjugate addition/alkylation sequence to set the key quaternary carbon stereochemistry.  In addition, the use of organoindium methodology to form the bicyclic alcohol will be discussed.
