Biodegradable polymers are used in a number of applications such as drug delivery, temporary prosthetics, and scaffolds for tissue engineering.  Key to their utility is their ability to minimize the inflammatory response and to degrade into benign products under physiological conditions.  To achieve this, methods are needed that can both identify and quantify the degradation products of novel therapeutic polymers.  In this presentation, we report on the development of a liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometric (LC/MS/MS) method to evaluate the degradation products from the hydrolysis of poly(lactic-glycolic acid) (PLGA) polymers that have been modified with anti-inflammatory agents.  The identification of these products coupled to the associated toxicology profiles of the degradation species will lead to a better understanding of how surrounding tissues may respond to these new therapeutic materials.
