The Raman scattering spectra ofperovskites show interesting features due to both cation disorder and octahedraltilting within the structure. Disordered perovskites show additional bands inthe spectra that cannot be assigned by factor group analysis alone. While x-raydiffraction (XRD) techniques are commonly used to determine the symmetry of acrystal, it is limited by the fact that XRD can only detect the overallsymmetry. In these disordered systems, Raman has the ability to probe the localsymmetry, which may be different than the overall symmetry. Varying thedisorder of the Sc3+ and Ta5+ ions in Ba2ScTaO6shows that Raman forbidden features become prevalent in the spectra for thedisordered structure. These features become significantly less noticeable in themore highly ordered crystal. The effect of octahedral tilting on the Ramanspectra is also currently being investigated. Studying the Raman spectra of theperovskite family shows promise for the use of Raman scattering as a probe intothe local ordering structure of extended solids.
