Carbon belts were synthesized from coal-based iron-containing carbon rods via arc-plasma in acetylene. The as-obtained carbon belts were studied by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.   The   results   show   that   the as-obtained carbon   belts   have   a width-to-thickness ratio of 6.5-30 and are composed of amorphous carbon. The possible mechanism involved in the formation process of carbon belts is proposed and discussed in terms of the chemical composition of coal and the process  parameters adopted in the study.
