Reverse iodine transfer polymerization (RITP) has emerged as an easy, efficient and robust method of controlled radical polymerization. In recent studies, we focused on the kinetics and mechanisms of RITP to control the iodine end-chain functionality of the polymer chains, which in turn has opened the door to macromolecular engineering thanks to the richness of the chemistry of iodo-compounds. Indeed, we were able to synthesize ?-functional (-CO2H or -OH) poly(1,1,2,2-tetrahydroperfluorodecyl acrylate) chains, cationic poly(vinylbenzyl triethylammonium chloride)-b-polystyrene, ionogenic polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) and non-ionic polystyrene-b-poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymers as well as poly(butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene-b-poly(butyl acrylate) and polystyrene-b-poly(butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene triblock copolymers. Thus, RITP proves to be a promising tool for polymer chemists as a starting point for macromolecular engineering and offers a high potential of development on the industrial scale.
