Analysis of recent financial results from pharmaceutical companies indisputably indicates that the industry is struggling.  Among reasons often cited is an inefficient business model and decreased productivity. Pharmaceutical companies are beginning to transform themselves to address these problems. Increasingly, a model of research is evolving that involves networks of external high value partnerships.  Research collaborations with external organizations, including biotechs and academic centers are increasingly common. In addition, shared risk development projects distributing development work across pharmaceutical companies are beginning to bear fruit. Perhaps most notable are external research relationships with contract research organizations or more advanced joint research collaborations. Common to all these models is the broad global nature of work being done. This talk will present specific challenges and opportunities encountered as a scientific leader at the Biocon-BMS R&D Center (BBRC) in Bangalore, India.
