The talk will examine efforts to consistently enhance safety practices in a new science building located in an urban setting. The building serves three institutions of higher education, each with chemistry, biology, earth science and psychology departments. More than 4800 students each semester are served in teaching labs and hundreds more participate in undergraduate and graduate research. Managing the facility's safety protocols presents a unique challenge physically and psychologically. Progress in the area of safety management during the first year of building occupation will be described.
