The Analytical Development Directorate in the Savannah River National Laboratory develops and maintains capabilities to characterize highly radioactive materials to support the missions of the Savannah River Site and the Department of Energy.  Recently, a miniature x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer was adapted for installation into an existing radiological glove box housing an x-ray powder diffractometer.  The XRF spectrometer provides semi-quantitative elemental analysis and significantly enhances the analytical capability of the powder diffractometer by filtering potential crystal phase matches by chemical composition.  The performance of the XRF spectrometer is similar to larger and much more expensive laboratory energy dispersive XRF instruments.
