The management of CO2 emissions is one of the most significant political and technical challenges associated with fossil fuel usage.  Most reliable predictions indicate that fossil resources will remain critical for meeting the world's energy demand until renewable and nuclear sources can balance our portfolio.  Many of the technical challenges associated with CO2 management can be addressed by developing materials for the direct capture of CO2, as well as its conversion into revenue generating chemicals sold to offset the costs associated with capture, storage, and monitoring technologies.  To address these technical issues, a series of structurally dynamic metal organic framework type sorbents were evaluated for CO2 capture from mixed gas streams in pre- and post-combustion sources.  Likewise, a series of unique nanostructured photocatalysts, using visible light for the photo-conversion of CO2, have been developed.  These materials and the technical challenges associated with their industrial deployment will be discussed.
