Monitoring and maintaining drinkingwater is vital both in ground and spacecraft applications.  This presentation describes the extension of colorimetricsolid phase extraction, a method currently undergoing flight performancetesting on the International Space Station (ISS) for monitoring biocides (i.e.,silver ion or iodine) in the potable water system, to biomolecules. The apparatusfor biocide monitoring consists of a polymeric extraction disk that is impregnatedwith a colorimetric reagent; the analyte is then concentrated by passage throughthe disk, and the resulting colored complex is measured by diffuse reflectionspectroscopy. The apparatus for biomolecule measurements is similar, but uses agold-coated nanoporous alumina membrane and gold nanoparticle labels. Resultsfrom studies to assess the potential merits of this strategy will be described.
