Mixtures comprised of particles with a variety of shapes and different chemistries pose an important analytical challenge.  Analysis with a single method reveals details about only one aspect of the sample.  For example, image analysis characterizes the particle size distribution but does not give the chemical composition information provided by Raman microscopy.    However, coupled static image analysis and Raman microscopy gives important new insights into such mixtures.  Raman microscopy offers high chemical specificity and sub-micron spatial resolution.  The access to low frequency vibrations enables identification of many inorganic and crystalline materials.  Even very similar materials can be distinguished with information in the fingerprint and high frequency regions.  With high-speed image analysis, thousands of particles can be automatically analyzed for size and shape, providing the statistics necessary for accurate distribution characterization.Here, rapid determination of mixture physical and chemical characteristics with Raman microscopy and static image analysis is discussed.
