The multi-step formation of a photo-induced charge separated state (CSS) isessential to the mechanism of many solar energy harvesting systems.  Decades of research have indicated that Ru(II)L3-based donor-chromophore-acceptor complexes (DCA, where L = 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline) are capable of CSS formation with excellent quantum yields (Fcss~1) and lifetimes (tcss~ 2 �s) while retaining approximately 70% MLCT energy. However, ruthenium is rare and expensive.Copper is abundant, cheap, and Cu(I)L2 exhibits many of the photophysicalfeatures that make Ru(II)L3 a good DCA chromophore. The similaritiesbetween Cu(I)L2 and Ru(II)L3 suggest that Cu(I)L2 may also function well in DCA assemblies. However, due to the structural nature of Cu(I)L2 complexes, construction of DCAs based on Cu(I)L2 chromophores requires a different strategy than the Ru(II)L3 systems. The goal of this project is to extrapolate from Ru(II)L3 DCA systems and design Cu(I)L2-based DCAs for fundamental investigations on CSSformation.
