A retro-functional analysis strategy was proposed as a function-oriented, rational, and modular approach for material molecular design. The exemplary development of soft fullerene materials possesses both �click� feature in material construction and wide versatility in hierarchical structure formation. The work has more implications in the development of a general molecular design principle for advanced functional materials.
