When using radiation for material processing, nocatalysts or additives are needed in order to initiate the reaction. Graftingtechniques normally include the pre-irradiation, as well as the mutual or thesimultaneous method; the energy source being gamma ray, UV or electrons. Poly [2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate](PDMAEMA) is a weak polybase with a pKa at about 8.0. In a neutral or a basicsolution, it exhibits temperature-dependent solubility and has a lower criticalsolution temperature (LCST) in the range 32�53 �C. Below pH 7.0, PDMAEMA issoluble over a wide range of temperature as a cationic polyelectrolyte becauseof the protonation of tertiary amine group. In this work DMAEMA is grafted bydirect method onto cotton gauze. Graft yields of 54 and 58% were obtained atdoses of 10 and 20 kGy respectively. The grafting was confirmed by FTIR-ATR andTGA. The infrared analysis shows C=O groups in both grafted cotton andpoly(DMAEMA) at 1722 cm-1 and 1724 cm-1 respectively andTGA showed showed 10% weight loss 315, 294, and 268 �C for cotton,poly(DMAEMA), and cotton-g-PDMAEMA 58% graft.
