Bothnormal atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and activators regeneratedby electron transfet (ARGET) ATRP were used to synthesize high-surface-area (~100m2/g) polymer brushes of low polydispersity via thesurface-initiated polymerization process on ordered mesoporous silica supports.The loading of the polymer and its molecular weight was controlled through theadjustment of the polymerization time. High loadings of polymers (up to ~30wt.%) were introduced without the pore blocking, which is remarkable fornanopores 10-24 nm in diameter. The ability to control the polymer graftthickness in mesopores extended over neutral neutral (methyl methacrylate,sytyrene, acrylonitrile and so forth) and ionic monomers (styrenesulfonic acidsodium salt). Silica-polyacrylonitrile composites were converted to novelcarbon nanostructures.
