DOE's Chemical Hydrogen Storage Center of Excellence (CHSCoE) operated between 2005 and 2010, and was one of three Materials Centers focused on discovering and developing viable hydrogen storage materials. The CHSCoE, comprised of researchers from two national laboratories, 4 companies, and eight universities focused on developing covalent, molecular materials as high capacity hydrogen storage media. I will describe the influence of DOE system targets on the boundary conditions around materials development for practical hydrogen storage materials that lead to most of our work focusing on release of hydrogen from amine boranes. Highlights of the chemistry and catalysis of hydrogen release from this class of compounds will be described, along with the chemistry of regeneration of spent fuels arising from their dehydrogenation. A look ahead to future research possibilities in chemical hydrogen storage will conclude the discussion.
