High neutron flux facility and new instrument development at the SNS have transformed the structural characterization capability for energy storage materials. Complementary to X-rays, neutrons allow us to probe at atomic resolution the interactions of guest molecules and ions with their surroundings involving light elements, and resolving the occupancy problems associated with neighboring elements in the periodical table. The newly commissioned neutron single crystal diffractometer, TOPAZ, provides continues reciprocal space mapping capability for experimental visualization of guest-host interactions. Recent results from single crystal structural study of anisotropic lithium displacement and thermal motion in Li(Fe,Mn)PO4 solid solution, and the effect of doping on material structural and magnetic properties will be presented.This research is supported by UT Battelle, LLC under Contract DE-AC05- 00OR22725 for the U.S. Dept.
