Compared to numerous examples of neutral or monoanionic pincer ligands, dianionic pincer ligands are less common. Recently, we have synthesized a new dianionic SiNN pincer ligand. The strong sigma-donating silyl group and the dianionic nature of the ligand were designed for supporting a metal in a high oxidation state, such as Pd(IV) or Ir(V). SiNN pincer ligand has been installed onto Ir and allowed access to the rare Ir(V) oxidation state.  For example, (SiNN)Ir(H)(Bpin)2 was obtained by treating (SiNN)Ir(H)(olefin) with excess pinacolborane and characterized by NMR and X-ray crystallography.
