Several terphenyl-diphosphine ligands have been synthesized and shown to stabilize low oxidation state metal centers. Molybdenum, cobalt, and nickel complexes have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal x-ray diffraction. These complexes display a variety of coordination modes to the central arene linker. These electron-rich metal centers mediate intramolecular aryl carbon-oxygen bond cleavage through oxidative insertion in the case of nickel. The effect of metal oxidation state on the arene binding mode will be discussed.
