Despite the numerous advances in homogeneous catalysis that have been achieved through the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as auxiliary ligands, very few macrocyclic poly-dentate carbenes have been synthesized.  We have synthesized a new ligand platform based on small-ringed (16 or 18 atoms) macrocyclic tetra-imidazoliums as tetra-NHC precursors.  These small-ringed tetra-imidazoliums allow for the formation of monomeric tetra-carbene complexes on group 8, 9 and 10 metals.  The structural, spectroscopic, and catalytic properties of these complexes will be discussed.
