A series of heterobinuclear oxo bridged metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) chromophores have been developed by grafting onto mesoporous silica either Ti or Zr as the acceptor metal and various transition metals as the donor metal. These all-inorganic chromophores will allow for facile tuning of donor and acceptor levels when coupled to reduction or oxidation catalysts in an integrated system for water oxidation and CO2 reduction. Although the chromophores are well characterized structurally (EXAFS) and by static spectroscopy (optical, vibrational), little is known about the excited state kinetics and electron transfer behavior because the samples thus far have been optically scattering powders. Transparent mesoporous silica monoliths and films containing these chromophores have been developed in order to conduct transient optical absorption measurements under precise control of the fluid environment (including vacuum) in the nanopores. Time resolved absorption spectroscopy of electron transfer processes of MMCT units for determining electron transfer parameters and gaining insight into how these chromophores may be used in an integrated system for artificial photosynthesis will be presented.
