Upconversion based on sensitized triplet-triplet annhilation is a photochemical means to generate high-energy emission from low-energy excitation, which has potential applications in solar energy and solar fuels chemistry.  This presentation will describe efforts to develop less costly copper(I) diimine based sensitizers to replace the commonly used ruthenium, platinum, and palladium dyes.  In copper(I) diimine complexes, the MLCT excited state undergoes a significant structural rearrangement.  This rearrangement leads to these complexes having large pseudo-Stokes shifts and very short lifetimes, which limits their usefulness as sensitizers.  Modifying the phenanthroline ligands with energy acceptor(s) and/or bulky substituents can raise the energy and lengthen the lifetime of the charge transfer excited state in copper(I) bis-phenanthroline complexes.  The photophysical properties of these substituted phenanthroline complexes and their performance as sensitizers in photon upconversion schemes will be discussed.
