Copper corroles exhibit inherent, ligand noninnocence-driven  saddling, which may be accentuated by sterically hindered peripheral substituents. Thus, copper �-octakis(trifluoromethyl)-meso-triphenylcorrole, Cu[(CF3)8TPC], is exceedingly saddled, with adjacent pyrrole rings nearly orthogonal to one another. By contrast, Au[(CF3)8TPC] has a planar corrole macrocycle, suggesting a innocent corrole ligand. Electrochemistry, electronic absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations all lend credence to this picture. Single-crystal X-ray structures of the Au and Cu complexes are depicted in Figures 1(a,b) and (c), respectively.
