Recent advances in the chemistry of stable carbenes have demonstrated  that bent allenes behave as significantly strong s-donating carbene  ligands when compared to the more traditional N-heterocyclic carbenes.  To exploit the different donicities exhibited by these two classes of  stable carbenes, we questioned if novel ditopic biscarbenes could be  prepared which feature two electronically distinct carbenes; i.e.,  an N-heterocyclic carbene as well as a bent allene. Ligands of this  type should therefore be capable of supporting two different transition  metal fragments (one at each carbene �face�). Presented herein are our  efforts toward the synthesis of these novel Janus-type biscarbenes which  feature the two distinct carbene ligands oriented in a facially-opposed  fashion.
