Four 1,1-substituted silole and germole derivatives were characterized spectroscopically: 1,1-diallyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole (diallyl silole), 1,1-diallyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylgermole (diallyl germole), 1,1-bis(3-hydroxypropyl)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole (diol silole) and 1,1-bis(3-hydroxypropyl)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylgermole (diol germole). The characterization involved determining absorption and emission parameters, molar absorptivities, quantum yields, and luminescence lifetimes in dioxane solutions. A study of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in dioxane/water systems was also completed; the diol compounds showed significantly different behavior in dioxane/water systems than expected based on the reference compounds, 1,1-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole and 1,1-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylgermole. The results are compared with those of previous studies of the reference compounds mentioned above to illustrate the effect different substituents at the 1 position of the silole core ring.
