To better understand spectroscopy of platinum complexes with polypyridyl ligands, a series of platinum(II) complexes with chelating benzimidazolyl ligands has been prepared. These complexes exhibit emission at room temperature in the solid state and fluid solution, as well as at 77K in glassy solutions. In fluid solution, they exhibit a strong tendency to aggregate. In this presentation, we will discuss the electronic and NMR spectra, as well as the electrochemical properties of these complexes. The electronic properties of these complexes also will be discussed and contrasted with those of related polypyridyl complexes.
