Organic chemistry is challenging because it requires students to develop skills in structure recognition and logic while studying reactions and mechanisms in a largely pictorial language. Several protocols for identifying students' errors will be presented. First is the use of �recognition checklists� to test the students' abilities in identifying molecular structures. Second is the use of modified reaction wheels and modified reaction mechanisms to determine whether they know standard reactions and mechanisms. Third, students carry out problems that are solved using a linked series of Socratic questions. Errors at each step are explained. This allows the student to identify the source of the error. Fourth, students answer palette-based multiple-choice questions on synthesis and mechanism, in which they must deduce answers rather than recognize them. For reinforcement, group-learning questions have been devised that require students to grade examination questions. They must identify the correct answers and the sources of error.
