Comprehensive knowledge of chlorine degradation mechanism of polyamide (PA) nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes is essential to the development of chlorine resistant membrane. In this study, the chemical bonding changes in coated and uncoated fully aromatic (FA) and piperazine (PIP) semi-aromatic PA membranes were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The results show that the degree of chlorine incorporation was a strong function of the amide structure and the nitrogen content, in addition to the chlorination conditions. PVA coating did not prevent chlorination of the PA matrix underneath. The streaming potential and contact angle measurements implied competing effects of the simultaneous chlorination and hydrolysis processes.
