The distribution of perfluorochemicals (PFCs) in a local reservoir after closure of a barrage was studied. A total of 19 PFC compounds were monitored in the water column, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments. Results show that average total aqueous concentrations of PFCs ranged from 100 to 150 ng/L, whereas sediments and SPM had levels 2 to 3 orders of magnitude higher. Depth profiles indicated vertical stratification with highest concentrations of PFCs in SPM at the surface (~ 2.5 ppb), which were lower by a factor of 4-10 in the dry months. Total PFCs in sediment cores were as high as 75 ppb in the top layer compared to about 20 ppb at a distance 0.5m below. In aqueous phase, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were the dominant species whereas longer chains and sulfonamide compounds were more dominant in the solid phase.
