For utilizing biomass as new resources of petrochemicals or high quality fuels, catalytic conversion of oxygen-containing intermediates which can be derived from biomass by hydrothermal reaction or acid-fermentation was investigated using zeolite catalysts. By using HZSM-5, any kind of oxygen-containing intermediate such as mono-saccharides, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, levulinic acid, lactic acid, acetic acid was converted to aromatic and olefin hydrocarbons, which are important basic chemicals in the petrochemical industry. These reactions were quite similar to the conversion of acetone or ethylmethylketone into aromatics and olefins over HZSM-5. Selectivity for mono-aromatics such as BTX and naphthalenes depended on the species of oxygen-containing intermediates. It was shown from by-product gas that deoxygenation from the intermediates proceeded by dehydration and decarbonylation. It was indicated that the reactivity of HZSM-5 such as hydrogen transfer, aldol condensation, cyclization and shape-selective rearrangement served for successive reaction steps efficiently to convert the intermediates to aromatics and olefins.
