As naturally occurring hydrogen gas (H2) is rare on Earth, cost-effective and environmentally friendly processes are needed to generate this gas for a variety of applications. One such potential process is the catalytic gasification of carbon-based feedstocks. Catalysts not only increase the rate of reactions while decreasing the energy intensity of a process, but also improve selectivity to the desired product. A further reduction in greenhouse gas emissions may be achieved if catalysts are obtained from a renewable source such as biomass. We have studied different co-feeding and catalyst addition strategies for the gasification of petroleum coke, coal, biomass, and municipal waste (biosolids). Although catalysts may reduce the formation of tars, the produced gas stream may still require clean-up because of sulphur compounds arising from alternative feedstocks. Matching the temperature of the gas clean-up to that of the gasifier improves the efficiency of the overall process.
