Bacterial cellulose (BC), produced by Gluconacetobacter xylinum,consists of ribbon-shaped nano-fibers in web-like structures. This natural polymer hydrogel has three-dimensional polymeric networks and imbibes large amounts of water. Conductive polymer could be synthesized on the surface of BC nano-fibers and assembled into a novel 3D networks. The reaction time of polymerization, the types and concentration of doping protonic acids play a major role on the electro conductivity properties of the composites. It may potentially be used as flexible displays, platform substrates to study the effect of electrical signals on cell activity, direct desirable cell function for tissue engineering application, implantable electrochemical biosensors, electro-stimulated drug release devices and neural prosthetics and so on.
