Abstract:This presentation will discuss the ways in which people with blindness or low vision (BLV) have participated in the chemical industry to date. New emerging technologies that allow for more independent laboratory work for people with BLV will also be discussed. Examples of chemists with visual impairments will also be included. The types of employment opportunities for the blind in the chemical and other science professions will also be presented. Further, total emersion programs for the blind in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs such as the National Federation of the Blind's 2011 Youth Slam summer science academy will illustrate how hands-on science learning experiences can lead to greater interest in STEM professions for the blind.
