During the last three decades, poly(p-phenylene vinylenes) (PPVs) have developed into one of the most important classes of organic semiconducting polymers. One of the synthetically most powerfull and economically most attractive synthetic access to PPV proceeds via the Gilch route. The Gilch route allows introducing a broad variety of lateral substituents into the PPV. It is one intention of the work presented here to analyze the tolerance of the Gilch polymerization protocol toward bulky substituents attached to the monomers at different positions. The other intention is to find the key requirements that have to be fulfilled for the Gilch synthesis of high-molecular-weight PPVs which emit in the blue range due to steric perturbations caused by bulky lateral substituents.
