We describe a variety of techniques on a microchip, some incorporating capillary electrophoresis (CE), to analyze and separate a myriad of biological species and other materials utilizing fluorescence, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and UV-Vis (fiber optics assembly) detection schemes. Specifically, separations of dyes, products from enzyme reactions and study of binding assays are examined. Integration of modeling in the development of some of the microchips and the associated experimental parameters is also detailed. These results demonstrate the potential of developing versatile microfluidic-based platforms with various detection schemes for the study of multiple molecular systems.
