Ultrathin films of amorphous cellulose were prepared by regenerating cellulose from spin coated trimethylsilyl cellulose (TMSC). The films were exposed to aqueous alkaline and monocomponent cellulase enzyme solutions and their behaviour was investigated. Aqueous swelling was examined with neutron reflectivity and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). Partial dissolution in dilute alkali (sodium hydroxide) and enzymatic hydrolyses were also followed with QCM-D. A variety of films with different thickness values were employed in an attempt of kinetic analysis for the enzymatic hydrolysis with monocomponent endoglucanases. It turned out that neither sodium hydroxide nor monocomponent cellulases were able to remove the amorphous cellulose film completely.
