Natural organic matter (NOM) is known to simultaneously act as the initiator, promoter and inhibitor in water ozonation. Their contributions to the rate of ozone decomposition and �OH formation, however, have never been quantified due to the inherent complexity. In this study, we report a new method for the determination of rate constants of NOM in terms of these reaction modes via the integration of classical steady-state �OH model, Rct- concept and ozone decomposition model. We found that with the addition of an external inhibitor the rate constants of NOM as the initiator and inhibitor can be determined from the slope and intercept of the plot of 1/Rct vs. external inhibition capacity, respectively. The promotion rate constant of NOM can be determined from the slope of the plot of pseudo-first-order rate constant of ozone decomposition vs. Rct. The applicability of this method was demonstrated using three NOM extracts.
