The need to understand the adsorption of CO2 on surfaces at the molecular level is of fundamental importance in the advancement of technologies of both its mitigation and its transformation into useful chemical forms. CO2 is generally considered to be a Lewis acid that can, at least initially, interact with basic surface sites such as amine functionalities. In this lecture we will examine the evidence for this picture and present new results on the site requirements for CO2 adsorption. Using FTIR, we have investigated the species formed by CO2 adsorption of amine-grafted silica and the stability of these species. The results highlight the critical importance of surface hydroxyl groups in determining the nature of adsorbed CO2.
