Solid-state lighting with white-emitting LEDs promises to become the next revolution in lighting with their high efficiency and long lifetime. However, they have to fulfill or exceed the attributes of existing white-light sources: high efficiency (lm/W), lifetime, flux, color rendering index  and cost. By doubling the current standard lighting efficiency to ~200 lm/W, worldwide implementation of solid-state lighting could amount to a savings of 1100 TWh, or the equivalent of 93 large 1.35 GW power plants. This also would result in a 220 million ton reduction in carbon emissions annually.  Our research (in collaboration with Osram-Sylvania) has been to develop technology that will result in the fabrication of more efficient white-light materials by producing nano- and submicron-size phosphors for near UV-emitting  (380-410nm) LEDs.  The synthesis methods to prepare new phosphor powders and an electrophoretic deposition method to make films will be described.
