Plasmonics and metamaterials emerged within last decade have brought tremendous new opportunities and applications to control light at length scales previously thought impossible. In this work, we introduce two examples to apply plasmonics and metamaterials to energy harvesting and solid state lighting. Plasmonic enhanced rectennas are designed to convert MIR environmental radiation to electrical energy with improved efficiency. It is achieved by a combination of plasmonic optical antenna design with 104 geometrical light field enhancement factor and a metal/insulator/metal (MIM) high speed tunneling junction diode with extremely small volume. Metamaterials are first introduced to solid state lighting to drastically improve the quantum efficiency as well as the light emission speed at a desired operation wavelength range. The metamaterial based LED concept, metamaterial design and fabrication, analytical Purcell factor calculation, full wave simulation, and preliminary experimental results for samples with fluorescence dyes on metamaterials will be discussed in details.
