In this paper, the current theoretical and experimental status of the transition metal doped nitrides was reviewed. A series of GaN samples grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition doped with, Mn, Fe, and Cr , which have been suggested to be a suitable platform for spintronics , have been investigated. A comparison of the predominant theoretical models and predictions for ferromagnetism in the nitrides will be compared with the available literature for Ga1-xMnxN and GaN doped with other transition metals produced by a variety of techniques. In particular, the correlation of the structural, optical, and magnetic behavior will be analyzed in relation to theories of ferromagnetism in these materials.  Furthermore, some potential mechanisms for magnetic coupling in transition or rare earths doping GaN have also been discussed. This work will be extended to consider the incorporation and physical properties of transition metals in GaN nanostructures.
