We have developed a novel iridium chloride pre-catalyst supported by a modified bipyridyl ligand. The novel feature of our bipyridyl ligand was the availability of electron donor groups and hydrogen bonds near the metal center.  These groups are proposed to improve catalytic activity, either by allowing for sites to facilitate proton transfer, by tuning the catalysts by deprotonation, or through ease of construction of other catalysts by synthetic modification.  Our initial catalyst design was shown to be effective in homogeneous oxidation of water to dioxygen. Determination of whether these donor groups within the bipyridyl ligand influence the mechanism of catalysis will also be addressed.
