The inorganic polymer hydroxyapatite (HAP) is of special interest because of its affinity for metal ions as well as its role in environmental remediation and valorization. HAP was synthesized from calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid precoursers, followed by a calcination at 700oC. Modified hydroxyapatite (mHAP) was prepared with 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid at different temperatures. The unmodified and modified salts were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR and SEM. Ca/P ratios and metal ion sorption data will provide information about the effect of modification on salt composition and metal ion affinity.
