Sulfur hexafluoride, a green house gas with global warming potential of more than 20,000, of 10,000 ppm with a balance of N2 or He was thermally destructed. Initiation of SF6 degradation started at approximately 500 ? when water was not supplied. The optimum water content for effective destruction of SF6 was 0.6%, which resulted in decrease of destruction temperature of approximately 150 ?. When air was adopted as a balance, thermal destruction started at 750 ?, which implies that oxygen cannot oxidize SF6 directly up to that temperature. Using a GC/MS and FT-IR, the reaction products were analyzed: SOF2 and SO2F2 as reaction intermediates and SO2 and HF as final products.To screen catalysts for SF6 destruction, several metals and their oxides were tested. Chromium and iron turned out to be the most effective among tested materials. Details of the results will be discussed.
