Cellulose is the most abundant, renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible bio-resource on the earth. However, cellulose is hardly soluble in conventional solvents because of its intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Among the cellulose solvent system, ionic liquids (ILs) have been interested for their stability and recyclability. In this work, the effect of lithium salt on the dissolution of cellulose in ILs, 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIm][Cl]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIm][Cl]), has been studied as well as the regeneration of cellulose. The preparation and physical properties of carbonaceous materials from cellulose and sugars dissolved in ILs will also be discussed.
