The high porosity and surface area, and low density, of the Cr-MIL-101 MOF has made this compound ideal for gas sequestration, drug encapsulation, gas separation, and catalysis. We believe that a modification to the framework of this MOF will improve its effectiveness for all of its applications. Based on the favorable catalytic properties of Ru(III), we synthesized  MOFs with varying percentages of Cr and Ru. The mixed metal Cr/Ru-MIL-101 MOFs were hydrothermally synthesized over an 8 hour period, with the Ru reagent initially reacting being incorporated into the MOF along with the Cr reagent. The PXRD pattern of the Cr-MIL-101 MOF was present in four of the five syntheses, where there was less Ru than Cr used in the synthesis. Therefore, we conclude that the Ru was incorporated into the framework of the Cr-MIL-101 MOF, and that it functions as the metal center of a trimer, just like the Cr.
