Oxidation catalysis is a reaction necessary for the production of plastic and many other materials that seem now essential to our everyday lives. Unfortunately, the process of oxidation catalysis is poorly selective which creates unwanted byproducts, and has a low yield. So, the demand for development of a better process and understanding of the oxidation catalysis process is high; it would mean less money wasted on low yields and elimination of byproducts. Inorganic analogs of enzymes could provide a more selective method for oxidation of organic compounds. A Manganese-Lysine complex was ion-exchanged into the open lattice-structures of faujasite-type zeolites. A Manganese-Histidine complex was also ion-exchanged into the zeolite by an alternate method. Spectroscopic properties of the metal-amino acid complexes inside the faujasite-type zeolite were studied using infrared spectroscopy. Results from the oxidation of cyclohexane, benzyl alcohol, vanillin, and 1-hexanol will be reported.
